Your Style: For Men, 20-30

As you develop into a man, your twenties are a formidable period—they are a time of major life transformations. At this point, you may be transitioning from the world of academics into your career life. Some of your new endeavors can be seemingly daunting because they will have a direct bearing on the man you will become. Your twenties are a period in which you’ll have to make many decisions, ranging from financial, housing, whether or not to be in a relationship, what sort of job or business pursuit you will undertake…. The list goes on. Your sense of style and fashion can be a key factor in helping “mold” you and set you apart from the “pack.”

Some of your new endeavors can be seemingly daunting because they will have a direct bearing on the man you will become.

Creating a Work World “Dress Code”

20's dress article 1-fashionDuring the interview process, be astute to how your new coworkers are dressed (on all ends of the spectrum): the “good,” the “bad,” and the just plain “wrong.” Do not overlook the avenue of inquiring to immediate superiors or HR as to any appropriate dress code for your position. Each source may perhaps give you some very broad perimeters. Once you have these, filter them into what your own personal style is currently. Yes, currently…. This is a time of change everywhere in your persona. Work and personal style will morph!

Work World Attire

Discern what clothing and fashion you’re most comfortable with that follows your employment dress code. Work within their format! I am not recommending becoming a drone but, respect “corporate lines”—they are in place for a valid reason (even if you don’t totally agree). You can interject YOUR personal style through the use of colors, patterns, and textures to satisfy your style statement.

No matter your body type or budget, please pay attention to this simple fact: Do your shirts, slacks, or blazers fit your body type? If the answer is “no” or “sort of,” resource a good tailor and fix the issue.

Keep your shoes clean and polished to your outfit by wearing them with a similar color toned belt. If at all feasible, try to switch out shoes at least every other day—this will allow your shoes to air and dry out, which gives the shoe longer life. People notice your shoes much more than anything! Crazy, I know…but, true.

The Personal Life

Do you really think the khaki cargo shorts and the graphic T-shirt you rolled out of bed for that lecture in school still works for a Saturday night out on the town? It certainly does not! Make an effort to present your very best to your friends and those you want to attract.

This is the appropriate time and place to be adventurous—give it a go! Try a different color or much trimmer fit in a jean or chino with a similar fit in a bolder pattern or print. Your friends will freely offer their opinions. Lord knows mine do! It is through this trial and error process you “hone in” your style.

Be attuned to what your plans are for the venture out. Always keep in mind: style, comfort, and weather, then add in your own element of style and panache!

Have fun with it! Remember this: Your sense of style in your twenties doesn’t have to be a long-term commitment.
In closing, my word to the “fashion wise” and sensible: “Our attire for the day speaks volumes to everyone before we ever utter a word.”

Cheers, my friends.
