Manis and Pedis…No Longer Just for the Ladies

Move over, girls…guys want the seat next to you at the spa.

Veda Salon at Hotel Monaco in downtown Denver: Your oasis to becoming a “better man.” Reward yourself!

Men, in today’s work environment, we all strive to put our best appearance front and center. Or we should. This encompasses our wardrobe and personal grooming. Grooming, you say? Yes! The days of foamy aerosol shave cream and oily hair tonic are gone. Take the time to take care of you. That means find a hairstylist (cutter) that can work with your specific type of hair. Then work on a daily skin regime. The skin is the largest living organ in/on your body. Veda-Salon-Hotel Monaco.2I recently had the opportunity to visit Veda Salon at 1717 Champa Street located in Hotel Monaco (the valet parking is a snap). Being at Aveda Salon means botanical-based products that are not only healthy for the environment, but for you as well. Veda is a comfortable salon with a cool/hip style without being overdone. Owner Carrie Perkins and I had a great interview on the importance of men doing the spa “thing.” She has a wealth of skin knowledge that she has garnered over the 18 years in business. Carrie owns 4 salon/spa locations between Denver and Colorado Springs. Veda at the Monaco Hotel is under the care of Robert Robinson, Salon Manager. He was trained in the mastery of hair care at the Aveda Institute, as are all their stylists. The men’s sector of business is 40 percent, with 15 percent of that being travelers.

My guess is: men will visit a spa on a trip before they will at home due to a masculinity hurdle. When we do go to the spa, we opt for a massage. On the other hand, men are afraid to get a facial.

There is nothing more relaxing and rejuvenating for the skin than a steam treatment followed by a botanical scrub. Right up there on the relaxation scale of a massage. If the facial is not right for you, then opt for a manicure, and ideally, a pedicure. C’mon on, guys, we all need to get our nails trimmed and cuticles neatened up for ourselves and those around useven for work. Think about how many times per day we present something to another. Our hands are noticed. When you get a manicure your hands are massaged, then wrapped in soft, warm paraffin and heated towels. A slice of nirvana. As a final touch, they buff the nail to a soft matte lusterand you’re done.

Monaco Pedicure Copper Bowl

My personal recommendation is a pedicure: a warm foot bath in a copper bowl of warm/soapy water to start the process, the cleaning up of the nails and cuticles and general foot care, and a nice paraffin wrap, finished off with an out-of-this-world foot massage.

It’s amazing just how much tension and stress your feet carry. Whether it’s a lunch break for a 50-minute spa treatment or haircut, remember Veda at the Hotel Monaco. Once you experience this oasis of tranquility in your day, you will return over and over again.

If you’re not quite prepared to do the “spa experience” solo…take your partner! Enjoy some one-on-one time with them. Make this a date night outing. Hint: Veda will do a couple’s tandem massage.
