Let the Exploring Begin! Getting out of “The Relationship Rut”—Part 1

on January 1 | in Relationships & Dating | by | with No Comments

Have you found that the excitement that used to be in your relationship had turned into a boring routine? Monday night—football (wait, Monday Night Football isn’t very boring); Tuesday night—NCIS together on the couch; Wednesday night—Chinese takeout… You know the routine unfortunately all too well.

Are you ready to spice things up and get the fun and excitement you once experienced back in your relationship?

The best way to break out of the rut is to recommit to exploring and learning more about your true love by actively seeking opportunities to experience the amazing person you fell in love with in the first place. Through seeking to know your partner more, you could discover a talent you didn’t know she had or experience a character trait you already love in her in a new and different way.

Here are some specific ideas of things you can do together to begin this exploration process:

Try a New Class Together

This class can range from cooking classes to wine tasting to couple’s massage to a painting class to rock climbing. A big key to this is to check your ego at the door. Taking these classes isn’t about becoming an expert or competing with your lady to see who is better—it’s about exploring something new together and supporting each other in the process. This can be a very vulnerable experience, so be prepared to offer support and acceptance of the spirit of trying.

Set a Joint Goal

Find an area of life where you can commit to something together. Some examples are training for a 5K or an adventure race, committing to raise money for a charity dear to your hearts, or setting a goal to work together on your spiritual growth through study time or classes. Make this something that interests both of you. Once this joint goal is set, map out a plan on how to accomplish it together using each other’s strengths. This will also give you the opportunity to support your partner in her weaknesses, which is just as important. Remember to have celebrations along the way to keep you moving forward toward this goal!

Write a “2&1 Note” to Each Other

A “2&1 Note” is a letter to your beloved sharing two things that you truly appreciate about them and one thing you would like for the two of you to work on in your relationship. This is helpful because it starts out with sharing two positive aspects of your beloved and then allows you to share something you would like to work on to make your relationship better. When it comes to discussing the things you two would like to work on, keep an open mind and ask questions of each other to come up with a creative way to start working on and improving the great relationship you already have!

Relationships take effort. If you want it to continue to grow and improve, you need to choose to keep nourishing and growing it. The good news is, you selected your partner for a reason—so there has to be something you really liked about them in the first place! Start there and take on the challenge of exploring her to find out the other things that caused you to fall in love in the first place, as well as finding other things that you never knew before!
