Martinique

Picasso and … rum?  Great question, don’t you think?  On the island of Martinique there is a rum distillery called Habitation Clement.  No, Picasso never went to this distillery.   But when I said “Martinique,” didn’t that bring to your mind the Caribbean and a multitude of tropical islands?  Picturing the island of Martinique might have you thinking of beach lovers, foodies, divers, hikers, and sun seekers.  And you are completely right about this.

MartiniqueBut the one that … I did not mention above for Martinique is people who enjoy art.  Yes, people go to Martinique to bask in the sun and also attend Habitation Clement’s art exhibitions.  Are you getting the picture? (No pun intended!)  Since 2005, Habitation Clement has featured 147 artists and has held 64 individual or group exhibitions at the distillery.

Why do people attend these … art exhibits at a distillery?  It’s not the first place you’d expect to see a Picasso exhibition—but the Habitation Clement rum distillery in Martinique has a great reputation. It’s not new for this business to have an art exhibit; it’s had its own art gallery for some time.  But for the moment, the distillery is not only putting on a celebration of the work Pablo Picasso, it will also include the works of Aime Cesaire and Wilfredo Lam.

The show … “We Found Ourselves” includes a total of 60 works, including an oil painting by Picasso, ten paintings and numerous drawings by Lam, and a portfolio of works by Aime Cesaire.

MartiniqueNow, a little more about Martinique … It definitely has a French influence.  You can see the French ambiance in the cuisine and the beauty of the language.  Martinique is referred to as the “Island of Flowers”—you will find an abundance of hibiscus, frangipani, bougainvillea, and poinsettia.  Yes, the flowers are as plentiful as the beaches—which, by the way, are either white sand beaches or black sand beaches…how amazing is that!

I could go … on and on about the variety of flowers, beaches, food, culture, and activities found on Martinique.  So if this is a place you would like to vacation, check out Martinique Beauty—a blog I have posted on the website Much Needed Vacations that gives you lots more information about Martinique and some wonderful pictures too!
