New York City—Fashion Week

“Start spreading the news, I’m leaving today—I want to be a part of it, New York, New York”

New York City

… are the first words Frank Sinatra sang in the iconic song New York, New York.  You can always find a reason to visit New York, or at least I can.  Beautiful Manhattan, with its streets lined with iconic buildings and landmarks including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and Central Park, never fails to dazzle.

New York City

Two more important reasons to visit are the… people and the food.  New York City has a population of over 8 million individuals from all walks of life.  If you look to your right or left you will see the struggling artists waiting for their big break, and right along with them you will see people in suits hurrying to follow the money on Wall Street.

New York CityIn the 2010 Census, New York showed such a diverse background that it offers up endless experiences for visitors to enjoy—especially those of the gastronomic kind.  Food options in this city are amazing and you always have more than enough to choose from.  Everything from fine dining to street vendors are ready to indulge your tastebuds with modern and traditional fare.

you have to understand that Fashion Week in New York City is a time of year, rather than a single “event.”

But what about New York… Fashion Week?  To be honest about this, you have to understand that Fashion Week in New York City is a time of year, rather than a single “event.”  This is when international fashion collections are shown to the media, buyers, and the public.  And there are actually several New York Fashion Weeks, both in February and in September.

New York City

There is good news and… bad news about attending one of NYC’s Fashion Weeks.  There are attendance rules that vary by location, and are generally based on your connections to the industry.  What most people know or hear about Fashion Week in New York are Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York and Made Fashion Week.  To attend either of these, first you must register then request participation, or you simply have to be invited.  You can find information at either of these sites a few weeks before the February and September events.  There is also an application fee, which doesn’t guarantee approval.   Even if your application is approved, that still doesn’t guarantee admission.  This just allows you to submit to the various designers for their consideration to actually attend shows.  Hmm, why go to all this bother?  I’m not sure.

New York CityWhat I do know is that… there are also fashion shows that are more “public friendly”—Couture Fashion Week in New York is usually the event holder.   Couture Fashion Week is a multi-day event presenting a series of couture and luxury fashion shows during Fashion Week in New York.  The February 2014 event will be held at the New Yorker Hotel, which is in the heart of New York City’s Fashion District.

New York CityThe New Yorker Hotel is… in a great location, near the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Broadway, blocks away from the first Macy’s where the Thanksgiving Day Parade ends, and very close to Penn Station. The rooms are definitely small and it is an older hotel, but if you are out and about most of the day and well into the night it might be the place to stay.

New York CityThere, of course, is… the Ritz-Carlton New York in Battery Park.  It is a great hotel that offers views of the Statue of Liberty.  At this hotel, I would recommend a clubroom that has access to amazing drinks and delicious meals all day.  It is a jaunt to the New Yorker, but that doesn’t matter because taking a cab is very easy. You just need to be aware of time and how long it would take you to get there.  These are only two of the options—there are definitely more just depending on what you want and need.

New York CityCouture Fashion Week New York 2014 is… from February 14 to 16.   It features fine designers from around the world presenting exquisite garments and accessories like Andres Aquino.  Couture Fashion Week also has world-class entertainment and exhibits of art and luxury products and services.  A question you might have: Is there a dress code for guests?  Dress code for this event is elegant chic (no sneakers, jeans, ball caps, etc.).  Jackets are recommended for gentlemen, though formal attire (tuxedo, evening gowns, etc.) is not necessary.  The exhibits open at 3:00 p.m. each day and seating for the fashion shows starts around 20 minutes before showtime.  Each fashion show lasts approximately 30 to 50 minutes, including the performances—then you are off to see and do the rest of New York.  Remember, New York is a mecca for museums too…But that is a whole other article.

Have fun in the city that never sleeps!
