The BIG 5! Shirts Every Guy Should Have In His Arsenal

on December 6 | in Fashion | by | with No Comments

Regardless of your age, profession, style, climate, or opinion, there are five shirts every man must own. They are not the ONLY shirts a man must own; however, they are the most versatile, functional, and stylish shirts in a guy’s wardrobe. These shirts should be the backbone of his shirt collection. In fact, his wardrobe should be built around these five shirts. For decades, from American steelworkers to presidents, males have been photographed with these shirts on their backs. They are timeless—just Google JFK or Charles Ebbet’s famous photograph Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper. These five shirts are modern armor for every male as he carves his path through life. And yes…stylishly doing so.

Chambray

  • The Authentic Work Chambray. The workhorse of the collection. Perfect to wear when welding or dress it up with a suit and tie. It’s a man’s shirt. In fact, when donning this shirt, one’s hands become a bit more calloused—or at least appear to be. So beat it up, break it in! The chambray is better with age.

gingham

  • The Large Compact Gingham. The larger check breathes life into this trusted ally. An awesome sports shirt for next Saturday’s game or pair with a tonal jacket and tie for the upcoming wedding. Large gingham shirts are best with wide spread collar in black, silver, red, navy, lavender, or this brown by Gitman Bros.

bengal strip

  • The Bengal Stripe. Extremely versatile in any situation. Don’t be afraid to pair this stripe with patterns, as long as the scales differ. Still unsure? Think of it as a solid. Another benefit of the Bengal stripe is the thin, equal width lines help any man appear taller and leaner. A perfect midweek business shirt or layered under a crimson cardigan.

italian dot

  • The Italian Dot. The sophisticated, clean pattern adds character to a man’s wardrobe. Think of it as the change of pace shirt. The best dressed men in the word, the Italians, have one in almost every shade. All you need is one in blue, like this indigo dyed dot from PYA Patrick Assaraf.  Wear this with a navy suit and tie for a night out on the town or un-tucked with jeans.

white oxford

  • The White Oxford. The most important shirt in a man’s wardrobe. A man simply looks his best in this clean, classic white cloth. Oxford cloth is hardier than a pinpoint or broadcloth, making this a durable long lasting shirt. The oxford is traditionally modeled with a button down collar; however, it’s best in a wide spread. Wear this shirt with any suit and tie. Or, roll the sleeves up and unbutton the top two buttons for the perfect weekend look.
